[Review] Flying Moon In Space – Zwei

Flying Moon In Space are a Leipzig-based Experimental-sounding sextet that released their self-titled debut album in 2020. June 24, 2022 saw the release of “Zwei” via Fuzz Club Records containing 8 medium-length tracks, in which the band evolves its musical concept begun in the previous album. The opener “Traum Für Alle” begins with hypnotic electronic sounds, to which is added a solid and energetic rhythm section. Krautrock permeated with modern, electronic sounds is combined with experimentation, with modulations and effects used with technique. The intensity increases as the song progresses, in a very involving musical crescendo. The more electronic facet of the band’s sound comes to the fore in “Optimist,” permeated with Techno contaminations. Digital sounds intertwine with analogue ones, modulations and effects enrich the track, creating a track that is danceable and accessible but elaborate and sophisticated at the same time. Counting on electronic influences with forays into techno music, “This Exists” combines the tradition and innovation of the genre. The vocals are an added value to the sound, developed almost entirely on electronic sounds with an energetic rhythm that invites us to go wild. “Power” explores sound manipulations and drum machine rhythms, with a more reflective touch. The rhythms are no longer in 4/4 but more intricate and the melodies elaborate, enhanced by electronic percussion. With a rhythmic Drum’n’Bass sound, “The Day The Sun Was Made” is again energetic and engaging. With killer bass lines, a vocal that alternates between melodic and rap parts gives the track a distinctive touch, with very effective layered melodies. Returning to a softer sound, “III III” shows another approach to electronic music, more aimed at acoustic sounds. The bass line is deep and driving, the vocals melodic and the melodies at times melancholic. Extensive use is made of effects that help bring the sound from analogue to electronic, always used with technique and quality. The track with the most experimental music sounds “Dissoziation” has a melancholic atmosphere. The rhythm section is slow and the melodies dilated and enveloping, as is the vocal with an almost Psychedelic touch, where sound experimentation is the protagonist. The album ends with “Prophet,” which continues the musical discourse of the previous one, with an Ambient touch in the melodies. More modern and electronic sounds, it does not lose that Experimental touch and the extensive use of sound modulations characterise the structure of the track. A listen that explores electronic and experimental sounds with a modern and personal touch, alternating more electronic passages with others featuring acoustic instruments. The band has a high level of technique in the modulation of sounds, as well as in the compositional phase, managing to create fresh and modern tracks. A recommended listen for all lovers of electronic sounds, but difficult to categorise, as this band has its own original personal style and high-level ideas.
