[Review] Motorpsycho – Kingdom Of Oblivion

The Norwegian band Motorpsycho, which has been active since 1989 and has 25 albums to their credit, is known for being able to skillfully mix Psychedelic and Progressive sounds. The sound of the band in fact takes us back in time with its now characteristic mix of late 60s and early 70s, establishing itself as a mature band with always well-executed ideas. The album we’re talking about here is “Kingdom Of Oblivion” released on April 16, 2021 via Stickman Records. Containing 12 tracks of medium-long duration where the band proposes sounds imbued with Psychedelia and with interesting phrasing among the instruments that cooperate perfectly. The opening track “The Waning (Pts. 1 & 2),” which exceeds 7 minutes, is a solid track, where, thanks to the long duration, a theme with very Psych and engaging colors is developed, which immediately bring us back to mind back in time. The guitar is a great protagonist, with leading riffs and acidic but well-made solo inserts, while the rhythmic session is solid and the vocal is very enveloping. The title track “Kingdom of Oblivion” opens with heavy guitar riffs, deep bass lines and keyboards, which fit well into the musical context. The vocal then enters and the song develops with a pleasant atmosphere where the mixes between keyboard and guitar stand out, with a driving vocal. A decisive track, and a good choice for one of the main and supporting tracks of the disc. So we come to the softer “Lady May,” characterized by acoustic guitar melodies and a choral vocal, softening the tones and pleasantly developing on softer sounds. The intertwining created between voice and arpeggios is well made and captures the listener’s attention. “The United Debased” is another long track of over 9 minutes, with an acid guitar riff in the opening, to which is added a rocky rhythm session. The tempo changes are interesting, while the effected vocal blends well with the intense and engaging music. The guitar is the protagonist in the central part with a solo in the instrumental section, while in the second part the atmosphere darkens and alternates softer openings with heavier ones. The crescendo ending increases the intensity, closing with a second, shorter guitar solo. “The Watcher” which begins with atmospheric noises, and then inserts a distant bass and effected voices, a more experimental passage passage. “Dreamkiller” always on an atmospheric background is inserted a very dilated vocal and an acoustic guitar, and then with a quick change back to the sounds that characterized the initial songs. After a crescendo in the central part, the initial theme returns in the finale and the piece closes. A short passage entitled “Atet” offers us a pleasant intertwining between keyboards and guitar, soft and acoustic that guides us to the next “At Empire’s End.” A melancholy guitar melody with a deep bass, and then returns with the power of the initial songs, after the drop in intensity of the previous three songs. The sound mixes between guitar and keyboards on which a warm vocal is inserted, alternating more melodic traits with harder ones. The tempo changes and the development of the song are good, exploiting the instrumental parts to offer high-level sound interlacing, where the interaction between guitar and keyboards is on display. “The Hunt” begins with a cheerful melody and an intense vocal to which orchestral inserts are added, where in the second part in the long instrumental it becomes more experimental. A good pass, well developed and executed. “After the Fair” is the shortest track on the record, and it is an acoustic passage on the guitar, which softens the atmosphere. The longest track on the album “The Transmutation of Cosmoctopus Lurker” starts off strong with dark interweaving between keyboards and guitar, with rocky and sharp riffs. A perfect mix between Prog and Psychedelia, with tempo changes that raise the level of the song, rhythmic and engaging, while the vocal disappears a little submerged by the music. In the central instrumental section, the pulled guitar solo is good, and then in the second part it becomes a more intricate piece with more elaborate passages. The album tewrmina with “Cormorant” where the atmospheres are ethereal and plays mainly on effected sounds, which create an enveloping background that brings us to the end. An album that has many interesting songs, but which decreases in intensity in the central part and then returns with finely elaborated tracks in the final. The band’s maturity and technique are felt, with engaging, well-structured compositions that show mastery and experience. A listening recommended for all lovers of Psychedelic sounds with forays into Prog too, which very well combine a 60s / 70s inspiration with modern and personal traits. This band is a certainty, offering a vast discography studded with high quality works, as evidenced by this new chapter where the listener’s expectation is rewarded.
