Pharm are a Canadian power trio offering Progressive Stoner Rock sounds with a heavy, aggressive edge. After the good deubt album, they released their first EP entitled “The Tower” on December 01, 2023 containing 3 tracks between almost 3 and over 7 minutes long. The opener “Infinite Stairway of Madness” is a concentrate of technique and power with an elaborate, at times intricate structure. The guitar offers heavy and complex riffs and textures, set against a backdrop of a frenetic, technical rhythm section enriched by continuous tempo changes. The vocals are incisive and give an aggressive touch to the already harsh sound, while remaining in a context of Heavy Progressive Rock. A track that shows the various facets of the band’s sound, mixing Stoner and Progressive with their personal touch, enhancing their compositional and performing technique. The longest track on the EP, “No Mouth, Must Scream,” which is over seven minutes long, continues to explore the heavier sounds of stoner and prog. It moves from more Rock moments to frenetic accelerations, with the tempo changes once again a real added value in the construction of the track. The vocal parts are energetic and fit well into the musical context of the track. The long duration is used in its entirety to develop and evolve the theme of the track, with sophisticated passages that combine the technique of Prog and the power of Stoner. The title track “The Tower” concludes the tracklist, continuing to explore all the sonic nuances that make up the trio’s original style. Granitic riffs, a killer bassline and solid, elaborate drumming create another concentration of technique and power. The sometimes choral vocals are engaging and add incisiveness to the sound. The Canadian trio confirms the good things heard on their debut album, offering three solid and technically very sophisticated tracks. The mixture of Stoner, Heavy Rock and Prog is very successful, offering a fresh and modern sound with markedly personal and original traits. A recommended listen for all lovers of the heavier sounds of Stoner, skilfully interwoven with Prog, three excellent tracks.
