We are pleased to offer you in this article an interview with a German band that offers
Psychedelic sounds contaminated by Blues, Soul and Stoner traits whose debut album
“Tales” was released on February 18, 2022. We welcome Sound Of Smoke.
Hi, how are you?
Hello! Flo, Bassplayer of Sound of Smoke here. We are very happy to have the
opportunity to do this interview for our listeners in italy!
The genre you propose is a Psychedelic Rock with different contaminations and 70s
reminiscences, where does your passion for these sounds come from?
We all have a strong connection with the music of the 60ies and 70ies. For me
personally it all started with the LP collection of my father. It was the first time i
was introduced to bands like Deep Purple,Beatles, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd.
So thats why we are all trying to keep the spirit of this time alive. But we are also
influenced from current Bands like All Them Witches, King Buffalo and many
more. We try to find a unique mix between the old and new sound which inluences
us.
Your self-titled debut album was released on February 18, 2022, how would you
describe this work?
Its actually not self titled! It’s called “Tales” and it is our second release after an
EP in 2018. We called it Tales because it consits of different styles, moods and
genres. It is self produced in our rehearsel room. We are quite happy how it came
together, even it took a long time to release and we are grateful that a lot of people
now taking notice of the band!
The vocals are intense and refined, what are the themes of the album’s lyrics?
As mentioned consists the record of different tales. There is not a special red line
but most of the songs can be seen as social crititcs. We try not to get to political
but we feel like we have a reponsibility as artists and we want to represent the
values we stand for.
Your music incorporates elements of various genres and is rich in contaminations, how
is the composition of the songs done?
Most of the songs are created from jamming. If we have a nice riff or melody we
build the other parts of the song around it. If we have the structure, we mostly add
the lyrics after. But there is no universal way we create music, mostly it all just
comes togehter magically in the process.
Many of your fans and readers are wondering if there will be a chance to hear your
music live, do you have any plans for that?
Actually we just came back from a little spring tour through germany, italy, austria
and hungary. We have several dates planned for summer and probably another
tour in fall.
Yours is a very interesting debut album full of ideas, do you already have plans for
future releases?
We already recorded another full lenght album last year in Berlin. It was recorded
completely analog on tape by Richard Behrens (Kadavar / Samsara Blues
Experiment – technician) at Big Snuff Studio in Berlin. We will release the record in
december 2022 via Tonzonen.
The music market has changed a lot in recent years, how difficult is it to establish
yourself with a more sought-after musical genre like yours?
Yes it really changed a lot how people get access to music. But we are happy to be
able to share our songs with a world-wide audience thorugh the internet. Of
course there is not big money in this but we are just happy to share our ideas with
a lot people. Money was never the reason for us to make music. We like to make
our music accesable to a lot of people and if they like it we are satisfied.
What advice would you give to a young band approaching the modern music scene by
offering more sophisticated sounds?
I would say always go with your own intentions and never try to copy music from
others. That way you can create more authentic sound. Just try to jam and don’t
think too much and don’t try to make everything complicated.
