Fu Manchu‘s cosmos is clearly structured: Enveloped by dead-straight Stoner Rock and garnished with often dragged-out riffs, the band’s lyrical world revolves around tried-and-tested constants. Where the Californians are, there are always thoughts about driving, women, surfing, skateboards and paranormal phenomena such as UFOs.
The band was only a bit erratic in its early days. The musicians in Fu Manchu changed faster than you can say “blueberry pancakes.” But since Scott Reeder took over the drums in 2001, Fu Manchu‘s lineup has been as constant as the natural phenomenon described in a hit song: the sun rises again and again.
In terms of personnel, Fu Manchu have been relying on the tried and tested for more than two decades, and musically the musicians have been above reproach for even longer. Since 1987, the Californians have been convincing and shaping the scene with uncompromising Stoner Rock; it’s fuzzy, it’s riffy, it’s straight. Song classics like “Evil Eye” and “King Of The Road” stand for this, and so does the 2018 album “Clone Of The Universe.”
Singer, guitarist and founding member Scott Hill sees the band’s sound concept like this: “Nobody wants a Fu Manchu record that sounds like a reggae album. When you buy an album from us, you know it’s going to sound heavy and fuzzy, with some slow and fast parts in between.”
