WDR Rockpalast YouTube channel published the whole performance by the Canadian Rock band The Sheepdogs recorded live at Köln 2023. Watch the whole performance through the YouTube player below:
The Sheepdogs may come from Saskatoon, Canada, but they sound like a pure Southern Rock band from the south of the United States. Frontman Ewan Currie describes the band’s style as “pure, simple, good-time music,” with a sound somewhere between Led Zeppelin and Crosby, Stills & Nash. This has made them a worldwide success.
Founded in 2004 at the University of Saskatchewan, the band initially rehearsed in the bassist’s parents’ basement. Their first material was covers of Blues Rock songs from the seventies, the early Black Keys and Kings of Leon. But the band around singer and guitarist Ewan Currie also wrote their own songs straight away. The first album “Trying To Grow” was released in 2006, followed by “Big Stand” in 2008 – both self-mixed and released with artwork by friends and family.
“Learn & Burn” was released in 2010. A music manager took notice of the guys and submitted a demo tape to Atlantic Records, which allowed them to enter Rolling Stone magazine‘s “Choose the Cover” competition. They won and became the first cover band on Rolling Stone without a record deal. They were then signed by Atlantic.
In 2012, the group won three Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys, with their wonderfully guitar-Heavy, Groovy Rock that had every audience dancing along. Numerous international tours, platinum albums and line-up changes followed in the years that followed. 2022 saw the release of “Outta Sight,” the seventh album to be nominated for a Juno again.
