Elder Liminal

In winter of 2024, Elder reconvened in Berlin after a year mostly spent on creative sabbatical. We’d been on tour for many months each year since the pandemic, and brains and bodies were in need of rest and reset. Before beginning to work on the next full-length in earnest, we decided it would be good to pick up a shelved project from years past as an excuse to get back in the saddle playing together. This work is mostly comprised of fragments written between the periods of Omens and Innate Passage, but which seemed to fit neither album. Meeting together in studio, we reworked the song and were surprised to see the session growing longer and longer as we jammed out into infinity. The result is a unique bit of Elder which has one foot in the past and one in the future.

Liminality / Dream State Return” explores the idea of the space in-between states of development; the lyrics were written mostly in a stream of consciousness while the song unfolded. For us, the project represents a picture of Elder in a transitory space.

In another first for the band, we’ve worked with longtime friend and filmmaker Malachi Cull to create an epic video (mini-movie at this point?) to accompany the 18-minute track. All in all, this was a special project.

Initially we intended this to be a purely digital affair, but being the record-collecting nerds we are, we felt we wouldn’t be doing the project justice by only making it available on a computer screen. “Liminality / Dream State” Return is therefore also available as a 12″ vinyl EP from Stickman Records. The EP comes on 180gr. translucent coke bottle green vinyl with an etching on the B-side and a download card, all wrapped in beautiful artwork by Adam Hill.

Surprise! Elder has a new EP out today. “Liminality / Dream State Return” is a single two-part track running almost 20 minutes and doubtless one of the band’s most experimental pieces of music so far. Recorded in winter of 2024 while the band was working on material for their upcoming LP 7 (planned for early next year), the EP is mostly comprised of fragments written between the periods of Omens and Innate Passage, but which seemed to fit neither album. Reworking and jamming on this material, something new took shape which the band decided to record immediately. As with everything Elder, it’s epic, full of twists and turns, and singular as always.
