Berlin School veteran Peter Mergener has been honored with the Schallwelle Award 2025 for Best National Album, one of the most prestigious recognitions in the German electronic music scene. The winning record, “Chip Meditation 2025,” is a solo release that marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic “Chip Meditation” album — originally released under the Software project, which Mergener co-founded alongside Michael Weisser in the 1980s.
Since the Software name can no longer be used for new releases, Mergener chose to put out this anniversary work under his own name — a decision that makes perfect sense, as he was always considered the primary musical force behind the project. The result is a deeply immersive Berlin School journey: warm pad layers, flowing sequencer patterns in the classic Software tradition, choral textures, and subtle sonic splashes that evoke the atmospheres of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream at their most meditative.
“Chip Meditation 2025” features entirely new compositions, yet it breathes the same spirit as its predecessor — hypnotic, spacious, and built for deep listening. For fans of Cosmic and Kosmische Elektronik, this is one of the most satisfying releases of the year.
The CD is available directly from Spheric Music. A new video clip has also been released — watch it below:
