Clocking in at 05:39, “The Leviathan Has Awakened” sets a somber, oppressive atmosphere characterized by deep-tuned guitars and a vocal performance that oscillates between melodic singing and visceral howling. The song’s narrative follows the tragic hubris of sailors who, seeking to dominate the “unending oceans” of a conquered land, find themselves at the mercy of a primordial force.
Lyrically, the track depicts a serene night under a “gibbous moon” that is violently interrupted as the sea rises and a colossal creature “blots out the sky,” splintering their vessel and sealing their Doom. This nautical nightmare reflects the broader themes of the album, which evokes the terrifying sensation of reliving a maritime catastrophe—crashing waves, sinking ships, and horrors beyond human comprehension.
