For Progressive and Hard Rock aficionados, the name Orang-Utan carries a legendary, almost mythical weight. The band originally began as a North London outfit called Hunter, featuring drummer and principal songwriter Jeff Seopardie, guitarists Mick Clarke and Sid Fairman, bassist Paul Roberts, and vocalist Terry “Nobby” Clark. Shepherded by manager, impresario, and future Babys architect Adrian Millar, the band entered the renowned De Lane Lea Studios in mid-July 1970. Under the guidance of engineer Louis Austin, they recorded eight tracks in a single afternoon—capturing a raw, muscular, and uncompromising Hard Rock sound.
However, the band’s history took a bizarre turn. In 1971, the master tapes surfaced in the United States on Bell Records under the name Orang-Utan—completely without the band’s knowledge, consent, or compensation. While the record quietly evolved into an elusive holy grail for Psych and Hard Rock collectors worldwide, the musicians themselves were left in the Dark, watching their uncredited creation take on a life of its own.
Compounding this historical injustice, every single reissue of the album over the last fifty-five years was sourced from an inferior LP transfer rather than the original tapes. As a result, the album that generations of fans grew to love actually ran approximately 2% slower than the band originally recorded it.
Now, fifty-five years late, justice is finally being served “from the right tape.”
Following the passing of Adrian Millar, his original 8-track session master tape was recovered from a loft. Under the care of Think Like A Key Music, these historic recordings have been returned to their correct speed and fully restored. Newly speed-corrected and remixed by Sean B. Perkins, “The Producer’s Cut” expands the original eight tracks into a massive 24-track archival package across three distinct presentations:
– The Producer’s Cut: The newly restored, speed-corrected, and polished versions of the 1970 tracks.
– The Original Session: Raw, original instrumental sessions complete with genuine studio banter.
– The LP Remix: A faithful, high-fidelity modern remix of the original LP sequence.
Scheduled for a limited pressing on August 28, 2026, the physical 2xCD “The Right Tape Edition” will be housed in a premium digipak. It includes a comprehensive 32-page booklet loaded with detailed liner notes and rare archival memorabilia compiled by Mark V. Perkins. High-quality digital editions (including 16-bit Lossless WAV/FLAC and MP3) will also be available on the same release date.
