In continuation of our deep-dive into the diamond vaults of US Prog, it is with great pleasure that we bring you the first reissue of the 2 ultra rare albums by the Detroit-based October. This is a deliciously eclectic combo of sonic explorers whose recorded testament consists of a string of pebbles that crystalized in a collectively interminable quest for that eccentrically elusive eureka moment. Fueled by King Crimson and Yes, but also by the improvisational energy of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Miles Davis’ electric ensembles, their aesthetic approach parted with formulaic silos while opening to film and classical composition, with notable inspiration drawn from film composer Bernard Herrmann and Avant-Garde figures like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Igor Stravinsky, as well as early synthesizer innovators like Wendy Carlos and Brian Eno. The band’s name was carefully chosen to underscore the highly evocative mood-states generated by their music, a sense of autumnal melancholy and subtle darkness that balances beauty with unease, inspired by associations with Halloween and seasonal transition. This is the first time that both albums recorded by October, with “After the Fall” having been originally released in a handful of copies, are available on CD format, remastered by the band. The vinyl edition of their self-titled debut comes in 3 colors and includes the 2nd album as bonus cd.
