Multi-Instrumentalist Koroletski has officially announced “Kubla Khan,” a Progressive Psychedelic Art-Rock opera setting the complete surviving text of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1797 poem to music. The work is now available for streaming and pre-save.
Coleridge originally conceived the poem during an opium-influenced dream after reading about Xanadu, the summer residence of the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan. Although the poet experienced a vision of two to three hundred lines while asleep, an unexpected visitor interrupted him as he wrote it down upon waking. Most of the vision vanished from his memory, leaving only fifty-four lines intact.
Rather than offering a literal musical illustration or a conventional collection of individual songs, Koroletski transforms this surviving fragment into a single, continuous musical journey. Designed as a complete concept album, the release creates a new musical space around Coleridge‘s unfinished poem. The piece moves through four connected chapters, incorporating quiet piano passages, Blues motifs, Heavy Progressive-Rock sections, Theatrical turns, and Psychedelic chaos.
Aiming at listeners of large-scale narrative and concept records, the release aligns stylistically with works such as The Who’s “Tommy,” Aphrodite’s Child’s “666,” and classic Pink Floyd.
The composition spans just over 27 minutes, opening with an Announcement, followed by Chapters I through IV, and concluding with an Outro. In addition to adapting Coleridge’s poetry, Koroletski produced the entire work—handling all music, melodic material, concept development, arrangement direction, mixing, visual design, and video editing.
