“Farben” is the new album by Swiss-born, Spain-based composer and trumpeter Markus Breuss, one of the most genuinely singular figures in European contemporary music.
Over four decades, Breuss has built a body of work that refuses easy categorisation: Free Jazz, Electroacoustics, Chamber composition, collage, Electronics and Free Improvisation, filtered through an encyclopedic curiosity and an ear shaped by Sun Ra, Alban Berg, Stockhausen and Don Cherry. El País once described him as a mixture of Pink Floyd and Stockhausen.
“Farben” gathers eight pieces that reflect the full scope of that restless practice. Voices recorded in New York and Izhevsk. Musical phrases borrowed from Roscoe Mitchell, Agustín Lara and Isaac Albéniz. Texts from Ibn Battuta and the Reyes Católicos. A cello and piano duo built from live sound fragments. A piece for Korg MS-20 and valve trombone. A Lithuanian goat horn with five variations. The Baltic Connection playing live in Barcelona. A Thai children’s toy reimagined through electronics.
Geography, language, instrumentation and genre dissolve into each other. That is the point.
