Independent label 5 Lunas has officially issued the self-titled 1980 debut album by Sevillian Progressive Rock group CAL, bringing the rare recording to CD for the very first time.
Originally tracked at Seville’s Estudios Gema between Easter (Semana Santa) and the April Fair (Feria) of 1980, the album was released later that year on vinyl LP and cassette via the Cardisc label (catalog number D-8002). Audio engineering was executed by Enric Catalá, with original cover artwork crafted by Juanjo López. Following its limited initial press run, the record became a sought-after item among global Progressive Rock collectors, with original vinyl copies routinely commanding upwards of €100 to over $280 on collector markets.
Formed in Seville during the height of the Andalusian Rock movement, CAL was established by keyboardist Alberto Toribio following the dissolution of pioneering Spanish Progressive band Goma. The group featured Toribio on acoustic piano, Rhodes, Mellotron, synthesizer, and vocals, alongside guitarist Pepe Fernández, bassist/vocalist Paco Muñoz, and drummer/vocalist Juanjo Muñoz, with guest vocal contributions from Maruja Cortés on the opening track.
Musically, “CAL” integrates Andalusian lyrical themes and regional acoustic accents with Jazz-Fusion arrangements and Symphonic Progressive Rock. Across its seven tracks, the album features intricate Moog and synth soloing, Mellotron sweeps, electric piano textures, and shifting rhythmic structures, culminating in the 9-minute multi-part suite “Colgao (I y II).”
The new CD release from 5 Lunas comes packaged in a 3-panel digipack featuring full-color interior artwork, restoring a forgotten chapter of 1980s Iberian Progressive Music.
