Dear readers, we have the pleasure of offering you in this article an interview with a band from Seville that mixes Andalusian Rock with Progressive and Jazz. We welcome Malabriega.

Hi, it’s a pleasure to have you among our pages, how are you?

Fine thanks, we are enjoying the positive feedback of our new release at this moment and we are very proud of it.

The band was formed in 2016, how was the project born and the choice/meaning of the name Malabriega?

This project began as a tryout to do a mix of genres including flamenco, and we based our work in Triana. We aimed for a similar blend but using modern genres of music. After this, we evolved our sound using all of our musical references to form a band where everything is allowed.

You propose a mix of Andalusian Rock, Jazz and Progressive, how did you get into these sounds?

It came in a natural way, we brought our ingredients to the rehearsal room and everyone put their favourite influences in the mix.

The new album “Frippada Andaluza” was released on March 12, 2025 via Astronomy Recording Music, how would you describe this work?

It´s an evolution. It´s based on our personal experiences. Nowadays we are older and we have experienced several births and deaths since our first album. These events made us change and influenced our music.

An intertwining of intense instrumental sections and vocal parts, what themes do the lyrics deal with?

Our lyrics are very sentimental. We deal with themes that have concerned people in the past, but still does in the present, such as the passing of time, love, successes, failures or the stages of self-destruction we go through during our lives.

Elaborate instrumental textures characterize your sound, how does the creative process of your music take place?

It always starts as an idea from one musician and the band iterates over the idea until we are satisfied with the result. We don´t have recipes, sometimes it´s a matter of minutes and sometimes the process can last months.

A year ago you released the last single introducing this work, do you have any plans to extract another one from the album?

Yes we have plans about it. We are currently deciding on the next single.

The album has a beautiful cover, who made it and what is the meaning of the painting?

Since the very first moment we started creating “Frippada Andaluza”, there was no doubt about commissioning the cover to Virginia Brun, we sent her the sketches of the songs and she presented us with the work we see. The goal is that any artist who collaborates with us expresses his/her own reality, as well as, anyone who listens to the album or sees the cover
makes their own interpretation.

This is your second full-length in the studio, as it has evolved your sound compared to the previous one?

We made several changes on the sound. You can distinguish between two stages. The first one, which includes songs like “Tu Pelo”, “Calamidad”, “Reflejo Vacío” and “Calamidad” forms a transition from the sound of our first album to the actual sound of the band. The second one defines our actual sound and mood, it´s a warmer, less direct and more mature sound.

Many of your fans and our readers are wondering if there will be a chance to listen to your music live, do you have plans for the near future?

Yes, our electric guitarist is currently recovering from tendinitis. We hope we can start gigging again in a few months.

Do you have any particular memories or anecdotes that you would like to tell us about your live experiences?

There are several anecdotes we could share, but perhaps the most memorable was our performance of “Reflejo Vacío” at the Totum Revolutum festival. The audience loved the song and gave us such positive feedback, expressing their love for our music. We had such a great time that even today we still remember the warm welcome from the audience and the
organizers.

Technology is taking more space in music making, what are your views on this?

We enjoy using new technologies like IR´s and fx simulations but at the same time we have space for vintage gear like real tube amps and effects. At the end, all are tools tohelp you achieve your tone.

Andalusia is a geographical area rich in culture and musical tradition, how do you see the current scene in your country and more generally in Progressive Rock?

We have really talented and original bands, for example, Fruteria Toñi, Glazz, and Sweet Hole. Regrettably, there’s not enough backing for these bands to grow, meaning they have to take on production responsibilities themselves.

What advice would you give to young artists who approach music with sounds like yours?

Having life experiences is essential for making music. Practice music, but have your time to feel and evolve.

Do you have other activities or artistic passions outside of music?

Yes, some members of the band are engineers. We enjoy poetry, traveling and sports.

We thank the band for the interview, wishing them all the best for the promotion of their new album and the continuation of their artistic career.
