Baroness 2025

Hailing from the fertile Heavy Metal scene of Savannah, Georgia, in the early 2000s, Baroness established themselves as musicians in search of new solutions, quickly moving beyond sheer aggression with a broad sonic palette drawing from Psych, Progressive metal, and sludge. Their sonic diversity is balanced by catchy melodies and vocals that soar and scream in equal measure. Their distinctive and consistent visual presentation is the work of guitarist, vocalist, and founder John Baizley, whose paintings evoke and reflect the emotion and complexity of each release.

We were fortunate enough to meet Baroness during a day off from their Red & Blue tour, where they performed their legendary first two albums (“Red” and “Blue“) in full. For our session, they blew the competition away with two tracks from their latest album, “Stone,” followed by incredible instrumental tracks from “Red” and “Blue.”

After the session, they sat down to discuss the unique challenge of this tour—playing “studio tracks” not conceived for a live experience—and the musical debates that accompany the creation of songs. They then presented their field-tested gear, including Fender and Rickenbacker guitars, Fender Princeton Reverb and Roland JC120 Lobo Edition amps, and a vast collection of MXR, Electro-Harmonix, Crowther Audio pedals, and much more.
