Adelaide’s Dyssidia resurface with their sophomore opus “Deeper Wells of Meaning” — a record that doesn’t just mark their return, but signals a clear sharpening of purpose. Uniting with Wild Thing Records, the band has opted not for fanfare, but for craft; slowly and methodically constructing an album that’s as deliberate as it is dynamic. “Deeper Wells of Meaning” explores disillusionment and reflection with a tone that’s more observational than overtly confessional. Where earlier works flirted with theatricality and virtuosic display, “Deeper Wells of Meaning” leans into patience and precision. This is a record more interested in what lingers beneath the surface than what erupts at first glance. That’s not to say it lacks heaviness; there are plenty of moments that hit hard, but the impact comes from restraint and contrast rather than sheer volume.
Musically, this album is a progressive standout, truly pushing the boundaries of what music can be, yet it carves out moments of clarity with more direct, hard hitting passages where the listener can briefly recover from the onslaught of complexity and controlled chaos. Co-produced and mixed by Sam Vallen (Caligula’s Horse) and mastered by V. Santura (Obscura), it is a record that takes its time, and expects the same from its listeners. “We weren’t rushing anything,” states singer Mitch Brackman. “We had the luxury of space. And we used it.” After several years of quiet, Dyssidia now seem poised not only to re-introduce themselves, but to reshape the conversation around their place in the global Progressive scene. “Deeper Wells of Meaning” doesn’t overstate its own arrival, it doesn’t need to. The intent is in the details. And with more to come, this release feels less like closure, and more like ignition.
