The “Universe 25” experiment was conducted in the 1970’s by american ethologist John B. Calhoun to study population growth and its effects on social behavior in a “mouse utopia.” Calhoun created an ideal environment for mice, providing unlimited food, water, and space while eliminating predators and di-sease. Initially, the mouse population grew rapidly as conditions encouraged reproduction. However, as the population density increased, social behaviors began to deteriorate.
Mice formed hierarchical structures and competition grew, leading to fights and aggressive behavior. Soon, unusual social patterns emerged: some mice withdrew completely, showing social apathy, while others, dubbed “the beautiful ones,” focused only on grooming and eating, completely neglecting social and reproductive activities. Birth rates declined, and infanticide and cannibalism became common. With no new generations to sustain it, the population eventually collapsed despite the abundance of re-sources.
Calhoun concluded that overpopulation and lack of meaningful roles in society could lead to social de-cay, to a “behavioral sink”. This experiment suggested that abundance without purpose can drive even healthy populations toward self-destruction. Universe 25 is often cited in discussions about societal structures, mental health, and the potential impacts of overpopulation.
