Conceptualizing the video:
I am a filmmaker by profession. Even though I studied from an early age my real education is within screenwriting and directing. For the video for “Cold War in silence” I then wanted to take an approach in which the imagery is meant to support not only the lyrics of the song, but even more the kind of feeling or mood that the music attempts to evoke. I chose to try to create some kind of visual poem, where the images do not necessarily correspond to any concrete world or location, but they allow for association of a feeling… a metaphor of what is sung, and what is being seen on the video. In this sense I was very inspired by the music videos from Pink Floyd in the Division Bell era for instance, where I could later see the influence of design -for instance- from Storm Thorgerson.
The song – a scene:
The song “Cold War in silence” is a short scene in a much larger concept. Not only is this upcoming album a concept album with a full story, but also the album is part of a trilogy of records. My last album “Man on the shore” tells the end of the story of the protagonist who ends up being found dead on a fjord. This coming record “Stillborn Hope Vol I” is the start of the story of the protagonist, long before the tragic end. And there will be a next record in 2027 “Stillborn Hope Vol II” which will tell the story of the son left behind after the father’s tragic end on the fjord. So in this sense I approached this single as just a little scene in the big scheme of the story. The concept for this scene was to paint the protagonist realisation of the mechanisms in which he is being pushed away, manipulated to a secondary role in the family unit. How people around him are playing psychological games and tactics to make him feel not only disposable but also interchangeable. All this while the man is holding his first born for the first time.
What to expect:
This album releasing April 2026 (Stillborn Hope Vol I) is by purpose more acoustic than my previous records. This is intentional as this more acoustic approach is meant to give the record a darker, more surreptitious sense of foreboding and sadness as this protagonist is beginning to see the cracks in the family life, the manipulation and silencing of him as a man and as a father, while not being able to do anything about it. This oppressive situation I felt was a good fit for a more subdued yet dark record. While this first volume is in a sense more acoustic, the coming volume II (releasing 2027) will mark a contrast from the style of this records. Volume II will be the story of the son discovering the family secrets and trying to put together the puzzle and navigate the lies he was told since he was a child. This son will have to confront a reality that is painful and that reveals things he did not know. AS such, that record will explore a more extreme and heavy sound. More adjacent to a modern progressive metal approach, but with interspersed orchestral elements.
Featuring the single “Vulture” (selected amongst the “Tracks of the Week” by Prog Magazine), and “Cold War In Silence” (with exclusive quotes on Progressive Rock Journal (PRJ), “Stillborn Hope Vol I” is the second chapter of an ambitious new trilogy from Ozul.
Serving as the narrative prequel to 2024’s “Man on the Shore,” this album rewinds the clock to explore the “why.” While the previous record depicted the protagonist’s final tragedy on the water’s edge, “Vol I” traces the slow, agonizing disintegration of the family unit that drove him there. It is the soundtrack to a domestic “cold war“—the silence, the alienation, and the secrets that suffocate a home.
The Sound:
Created by filmmaker Paulo Chavarría, Ozul is defined by “Audio Cinema.” As an artistic choice, “Vol I” explores the project’s more Atmospheric, acoustic, and textural side. It unfolds with the patience of a film score, building emotional weight through dynamics rather than aggression. This sonic vulnerability sets the stage for the heavier chapters to follow.
