Gates Of Kiev is a Dutch project featuring the duo Tomas Mesman (Keys and Vocals) and Hessel Braat (Drums). The debut EP “Tales Of Aion” was released on July 19, 2024 and contains 2 epic tracks each around 11 minutes long. Several guest vocals, bass and guitar appear on the album, offering an EP steeped in Progressive sounds inspired by the masters of the 70s. The longest track “Cosmic Chronograph” that exceeds 11 minutes opens the EP, immediately immersing us in the progressive sounds of the record. Solid and elaborate drumming, extensive use of keyboards and a warm and expressive vocal, developing the track’s theme with intensity and quality ideas. A symphonic Progressive Rock inspired by bands of the past, but which the band manages to bring to the present day with a personal touch. The tempo changes are an added value, as are the instrumental sections in which the compositional and performing technique of these artists is enhanced. Being their debut, I was not familiar with this band, but listening to it from the very first track, I realised that I was in front of mature musicians with clear ideas who propose a high-level sound. This track is an addictive, technical epic reminiscent of the sounds of ELP, especially in the organ interlacing and drumming. For me an opener that alone is worth the whole EP, a true masterpiece. The second and final track on this EP entitled “Cava,” is also long, running over 10 minutes. The intro is characterised by atmospheric sounds that give way to keyboards and a killer bassline, before offering another excellent Progressive Rock theme. Continuous tempo changes and incisive vocals characterise the development of the track, with keyboards and guitar playing the lead role in refined and engaging solo inserts. Interesting is the mixture of different genres and styles that create an original track, between classical sounds and a fresh, modern touch given by the band’s originality. The listener is swept away by a sound that is energetic, engaging and full of sophisticated cues just as it was in the early 70s. A beautifully crafted debut EP, elaborate and engaging throughout, offering over 22 minutes of quality Progressive Rock. Keyboards take centre stage, between melodies and refined solo inserts, the rhythm section is solidly elaborated and enriched by well-constructed tempo changes. The vocal parts are dynamic and expressive, as well as the guitar in the second track in particular offers interesting and incisive cues. A recommended listen for all lovers of classic Progressive Rock sounds, brought into a modern context with personal traits.
