Moby Dig is a power trio from Leipzig, Germany offering a groovy blend of Doom, Psychedelia and Stoner. The self-titled debut album was released on December 13, 2024 and contains four epic tracks ranging from over 7 to over 13 minutes in length. Right from the first notes of opener “Welle,” the band shows its musical attitude and orientation, offering a rhythmic blend of Heavy Rock and Psychedelia. A solid and elaborate drumming that ties in well with the deep and poring bass lines, with the guitar free to work with well-constructed riffs and textures that allow them to range from Heavy Rock to Doom. The rhythm section and its groove are definitely a trademark for the band, adding power to the track. After the energic groove that accompanied the previous one, “Chill Pill” opens with a more Heavy sound and distorted guitars. The rhythm section is solid and elaborate, filled with continuous tempo changes, which allow this track to develop into a more Psychedelic sound. As the minutes go by, the atmospheres become darker and the sound heavier, with forays into Doom. The particularity of the rhythm section at times characterises the sound, with the guitar offering repeated and hypnotic riffs and passages. The album’s shortest track “From Dusk to Dusk” opens with a pachydermic and distinctly Doom sound, with the band’s typical drumming characterising the rhythm. Gloomy atmospheres permeate the track, which explores a heavier, darker side of the band’s sound. In the middle section, the elaborate rhythm section and experimental guitar works developing the main theme with intensity, then concludes by returning to the opening theme. The album ends with “Fellowship of Doom,” the longest track we heard as a stand-alone single anticipating the release. A track that incorporates all of the band’s signature elements, mixing Doom and Heavy Psych through this epic jam with gloomy atmospheres and distorted, piercing sounds. A band offering their entirely DIY-produced debut album, with four long tracks between Dooim and Heavy Psych inside. Some good ideas are contained within this work, with a distinctive rhythm section and the guitar free to work on riffs and melodies. The second part offers darker atmospheres and abrasive sounds, while the first part is more Heavy Psych.
