Cult of the Sun” is the second full-length album from Black Sea Of Trees, continuing their focus on immersive, narrative-driven progressive metal. Where their debut “The Spiritual Beast” established a foundation of atmosphere, weight, and spiritual inquiry, this album moves into harsher terrain shaped by desert imagery, ancient belief systems, and philosophical collapse.

The album is a concept work inspired by the life and downfall of Akhenaten. It follows a protagonist chosen by a sun god to overthrow an old kingdom and usher in a spiritual revolution. Promised dominion over heaven and earth, the new messianic king rises through devotion and violence. That ascent gives way to doubt as prophetic dreams and cosmic signs reveal an unavoidable end. The sun transforms into a black hole, consuming the world, time, and existence itself. The story traces a holy rise, a disillusioned reckoning, and total annihilation.

The opening track, “A Red Dawn,” begins in a state of paralysis and lament. Its slow-burning tension erupts into fury as the protagonist enters a covenant with the sun god. The destruction of old temples and belief systems closes the song in a violent crescendo. The track reflects recurring patterns throughout human history, where societal change is driven by conflict and bloodshed, and also mirrors an internal struggle toward identity through the destruction of inherited limitations.

Servant to the Sun” advances the narrative with forward momentum and focused structure. Marching rhythms and expansive choruses convey the protagonist’s euphoria after divine selection. A quieter middle section sustains a trance-like sense of devotion before the song resolves in an authoritative vocal register associated with messianic certainty. The song captures the psychological release found in unquestioned faith and complete submission.

Prophecy” functions as a dark folk interlude built around acoustic guitars and spoken word delivered in an ancient language. Its lyrics outline the full arc of the album’s story. The prophecy also appears in Egyptian hieroglyphs on the album artwork, creating a sense of foreboding that marks the beginning of the narrative’s decline.

Visions of a Crimson Moon” unfolds as an extended journey through shifting dynamics and textures. Structured passages dissolve into psychedelic meditation before reforming into explosive climaxes. Cyclical guitar motifs create a dissonant, bending motion that suggests gravitational pull and foreshadows the album’s conclusion. In the story, the protagonist dreams of a cosmic serpent that reveals the true state of the kingdom: a barren land of bone-built temples beneath a sky dominated by a black hole. The vision offers warning without resolution and introduces irreversible doubt.

Omen” adopts a more immediately accessible structure while retaining the album’s thematic weight. Middle Eastern scales and flamenco-inspired guitar work shape its desert character. The song depicts the moment when the sun god reveals itself as a force of death. Both ruler and followers are stripped of certainty, replaced by fear, confusion, and the collapse of meaning.

The title-track, “Cult of the Sun,” reflects the protagonist’s internal reckoning. Rapid shifts in riffs and tempo mirror emotional instability. The opening and closing riffs repeat in altered tones to reinforce cyclical symbolism tied to the sun. Questions of abandonment, false divinity, and self-deception dominate the lyrics as the protagonist recognizes their role as both victim and architect of the cult.

Field of Reeds” presents a stark acoustic contrast. Minimalist instrumentation and breathy harmonized vocals frame a moment of resignation. The song references the ancient Egyptian concept of paradise, only to deny it. The ending features detuned string sounds representing the unraveling of matter, space, and time as the black hole approaches.

Eclipse” closes the album with a sustained, meditative march built on repeating riffs and droning guitar bends. The pacing reflects the slow consumption of existence. Final lyrics express acceptance of extinction without divine purpose or afterlife. The track ends with the recorded sound of a black hole captured by NASA, followed by silence.

A bonus track, “The Dark Distance,” reinforces the album’s themes of inevitability and meaninglessness. Atmospheric passages and acoustic movements support lyrics centered on acceptance and futility, extending the emotional weight beyond the main narrative arc.

Across its runtime, “Cult of the Sun” balances long-form compositions with concise structures, drawing influence from Opeth, Cult Of Luna, Russian Circles and Karnivool. Desert tonality and Middle Eastern melodic elements are integrated without leaning on overt genre clichés.

The album functions as a soundtrack to its story. Shifts in mood, density, and dynamics guide the listener through the protagonist’s emotional and spiritual trajectory. Familiar elements from previous work appear in a more concise form, offering a direct point of entry while retaining complexity for attentive listeners.

— About Black Sea Of Trees —

Black Sea Of Trees is a Progressive Metal band from Melbourne, Australia, formed in 2018. The band is known for creating concept-driven albums that explore spirituality, folklore, and philosophy through long-form composition and immersive atmosphere.

Their music blends Progressive Metal with elements of Death Metal, Folk, and Ambient Sound design. Songs move fluidly between dense walls of distortion, expansive melodic passages, and stripped-back acoustic moments. Clean vocals, falsetto, and deep growls are used as narrative tools rather than stylistic contrast, shifting alongside the emotional and thematic needs of each story.

Black Sea Of Trees approach songwriting as world-building. Each album is written as a self-contained narrative with its own sonic identity, allowing the band to evolve stylistically while retaining core elements of dynamics, weight, and melody. Changes in tempo, texture, and tone are central to their compositions, reflecting internal conflict, transformation, and collapse within the stories they tell.

The band released their debut album “The Spiritual Beast” independently in 2023. Their second album, “Cult of the Sun,” continues their focus on cohesive storytelling, expanding into desert soundscapes and ancient spiritual themes while maintaining a deliberate, emotionally driven approach to Progressive Metal.
