This is an album born of challenge: there were some difficult circumstances whilst it was being written, which no doubt coloured its development, but specifically it is the product of a writing challenge to record six pieces in a year. Besides the time constraints, other creative limitations were set, including in terms of instrumentation, keys and time signatures.

Each piece was to be written and recorded within two months, in a specific odd time signature, and each in one of the modes of the melodic minor scale. The time constraint was the hardest limitation and the one that was broken a few times, to varying degrees.

Towards the end of the year a set of lyrics started to bud and then flowered, adding a seventh piece to the set. The challenge rules were dropped for the song.

There was no concept, beyond the related musical modes, yet the passing seasons imprinted their character on the pieces and became an impromptu theme or mood running throughout the album.

The music was recorded, mixed and mastered in Ardour on Linux.
