Formed in Cagliari, Italy, in 2015, Plasticdrop is a powerful trio blending Alternative Rock, Post-Grunge, Hard Rock, and Punk influences. After years of shaping their sound through live shows and songwriting, they are now ready to release what promises to be their most ambitious and personal work to date. We caught up with the band to discuss
their journey, their new album, and their view on the current Heavy Rock scene.

Let’s start from the beginning: how did Plasticdrop come to life, and what were the key inspirations behind your sound?

The band was born from the idea of Paolo and Alessandro, who one summer looked at each other and realized that, given their shared musical tastes, it was time to form a band. Paolo already had some ideas set aside to develop, which was later easy to put into practice. Our sound is definitely rooted in the common influences of the ’90s but also spans into more modern alternative territories.

Your debut EP “Phenicopters” came out in 2019. How would you say your sound has evolved since then, especially in your new album?

Our first EP was quite a turbulent experience, and we feel like we didn’t quite manage to truly convey ourselves. Over the years, our band’s sound has evolved a lot, especially in relation to what we wanted it to sound like to our ears before anyone else’s. We’ve now found a balance that allows us to be primarily satisfied with what we create.

What themes or emotions did you explore in the songwriting process for this upcoming release?

The themes close to our hearts are those of everyday life, a life tied to consumerism—exhausting and relentless—where we all feel like grains of sand in an ocean. The album’s title reflects directly the qualities of what we want to express.

You’ve mentioned that this new album marks a new chapter for the band. What does this phase represent for you, musically and personally?

This album represents growth and maturity, not yet fully complete in our vision, but definitely an important milestone in how we want to express ourselves through music. The work done in Alberto’s studio, where he later became our fourth band member, has allowed us to evolve our sound in the direction we envisioned: a genuine, raw, yet
straightforward mix of Alternative Rock.

How did your island roots in Cagliari influence your writing—both lyrically and atmospherically?

They definitely influence us, since being isolated from the rest of the world can make you feel even lonelier in some ways. Still, Cagliari is a beautiful city, with the sea and the sun balancing out the isolation, creating magical atmospheres that are reflected in both our sound and that of many other bands from our area.

What was the recording process like for the new material? Did you work with any producers or was it a fully DIY effort?

Initially, we approached it as a DIY project. Once in the studio with Alberto (Cut Fire Studios), we found someone who was very willing to act as a producer, which made the process much easier and more enjoyable for everyone. The result is an album that truly satisfies us—and we believe it will appeal to many people.

You’ve recently signed with Argonauta Records. How did that collaboration come about, and what does it mean for the band’s next steps?

It was a big step for us because the label was willing to support us. Right now, we’re already writing new songs, and we hope they’ll continue to be promoted by our label.

Will you be touring to support the new album? What can fans expect from your live shows in this new chapter?

For now, we have some gigs here in Sardinia, including festivals and club shows. In October, we have a three-date mini-tour in northern Italy, and we can’t wait to bring our Music to places that, for now, are unthinkable for us. We hope that everyone who comes to listen will appreciate the effort we put into what we believe in every day.

The Heavy Rock and Alternative scene is constantly evolving. What are your thoughts on the current state of the scene—both in Italy and internationally?

I think a time is coming when alternative music will make a strong comeback. We’ve hit a saturation point with mainstream music, and soon there’ll likely be a revival of something more unconventional—that’s always been the case.

Outside of music, do you have any passions or creative outlets that influence your work with the band?

Cinema and reading are fantastic sources of inspiration—two art forms that open your mind and allow you to travel, much like music does.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer our questions. We’re looking forward to hearing the new album and seeing you on stage!
