Black Sabbath will revisit their oft-overlooked Tony Martin era with the upcoming “Anno Domini 1989-1995” Boxset.
The collection arrives on May 31 in four-LP and four-CD configurations. It will feature newly remastered versions of 1989’s “Headless Cross,” 1990’s “Tyr” and 1994’s “Cross Purposes,” plus a new version of 1995’s “Forbidden” that guitarist Tony Iommi remixed specially for the collection.
Black Sabbath‘s history with singers Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio has been extensively documented over the years in various collections and compilations. Until now, no box set has focused on Black Sabbath‘s period with Tony Martin.
BMG explores this prolific period of the godfathers of Heavy Metal in a new collection with the reissue of those glorious four albums. “Anno Domini 1989-1995” will be available from 10 May 2024 in 4xLP and 4xCD configurations. The set contains remastered versions of the albums “Headless Cross” (1989), “Tyr” (1990) and “Cross Purposes” (1994), as well as a new version of “Forbidden” (1995), specially remixed by Tony Iommi himself.
Some of these albums have been remastered for the first time for the vinyl format, while the CD version contains three exclusive bonus tracks: the b-side “Cloak & Dagger,” “What’s The Use” and “Loser Gets It All,” the latter two previously released only in Japan. The booklet features previously unreleased photos and liner notes by Hugh Gilmour. Also included is the “Headless Cross” poster and a replica of the “Headless Cross Tour” tour book.
“Anno Domini 1989-1995” picks up the story of Black Sabbath in 1989, two decades and multiple line-up changes since the foundations of Heavy Metal were laid. By that time, the band had solidified around riffmaster and founding member Tony Iommi, with legendary drummer Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Whitesnake), vocalist Tony Martin and long-time Black Sabbath collaborator and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls (Quartz, Bandy Legs).
The band originally released “Headless Cross” in 1989 on I.R.S. Records, the first of a five-album contract with the label. Praised by fans and critics alike, the band’s fourteenth studio release churned out three singles: “Devil And Daughter,” “Call Of The Wild,” and the title-track. Bassist Neil Murray (WHITESNAKE, GARY MOORE) joined the “Headless Cross Tour” and stayed on to record the next album, 1990’s “Tyr.” Named for the Norse god of war, the album explores mythological themes in songs such as “The Battle Of Tyr” and “Valhalla.”
In 1992, after a successful world tour, this incarnation of Black Sabbath was put on hold when the band temporarily reunited with Ronnie James Dio. Two years later, Martin and Nicholls returned to the studio with Iommi to record 1994’s “Cross Purposes.” The band was completed with the addition of another founding member of Sabbath, Geezer Butler, and drummer Bobby Rondinelli of Rainbow.
The “Tyr” lineup reunited in 1995 when Powell and Murray returned for the recording of “Forbidden.” It was the band’s 18th studio album and their last for almost 20 years. (In 2013, Iommi, Osbourne and Butler released Black Sabbath‘s last studio album, “13“). “Forbidden,” produced by Ernie C of Body Count, the Rap-Metal band fronted by Sabbath rapper/actor/fan Ice-T, who appears on the song “Illusion Of Power.” Since its release, the album’s audio enhancement has been one of Iommi’s favourite projects.
Iommi‘s comment: “I’ve never been happy with the guitar sound and Cozy’s definitely never been happy with the drum sound… So I thought it would be a good thing to be able to get back into it, without changing any of the songs; there was a chance to go back and bring out some of the sounds and make them more suited to what people would expect from SABBATH.“
