An exhilarating 40-year run for Voivod, a quartet from Jonquière, Quebec, who over the years have defied the odds, faced tragedy head-on and even saw the band reach heights above many of their contemporaries. Voivod‘s 2018 album “The Wake” won a Juno Award in the Heavy Metal Album of the Year category, while the previous year Away picked up the Visionary Award at the Progressive Music Awards in London.
Four music-obsessed young people who started living their fantasies in their parents’ garages and basements in the early 1980s. But there was always something that distinguished the Voivods from their peers. Fascinated by the ever-changing sounds of Heavy Metal, Hardcore and Punk Rock that were brewing in the early 1980s Voivod also brought with them a love of Progressive Rock and science fiction that has always had a great influence. about their music. If heavy metal was the soundtrack of outsiders in the early 1980s, then Prog Rock was an even more unlikely bedmate. Prog was the least cool thing ever, but no one told Voivod that. And it is this desire to blend sounds so seemingly disparate that has always distinguished the band. Prog Metal as a concept was largely unheard of when Voivod released their debut album “War And Pain” in 1984.
