Foreign Film, the emotive new Post-Rock band formed by several members of legendary Metallic Hardcore outfit Will Haven, today unveils their debut album, “A Love Letter,” as well as a new video for the record’s “Somnolence.”
Established in the heart of the fertile Sacramento underground music scene in 2023, Foreign Film is the vision of Will Haven’s guitarist/primary songwriter Jeff Irwin, with several of his bandmates bringing it to fruition. Ceated to explore soundscapes that differ vastly from Will Haven’s Dark Hardcore sound, Foreign Film takes its name from Will Haven’s song of the same name, found on their heralded 1997 debut LP, “El Diablo.” Irwin was curious to explore new boundaries beyond the walls of their primary project, infusing influences such as Pink Floyd, Mew, Hum, and The Cure to create a lush, filmic sound.
After a year of writing demos, Irwin recruited fellow Will Haven musicians — drummer Mitch Wheeler, guitarist Sean Bivins, and bassist Adrien Contreras — and a full year of recording sessions at J Rigged Studios in Sacramento began, with Weston Ray and Robert Kerr handling producing and engineering duties. Throughout these sessions, the lineup grew with the addition of fellow musicians Robin Florkin (piano, keyboards), Rylan Kerr (guitar), and Tami Taracena (backing vocals).
Now, having realized their core sound, Foreign Film is ready to unveil their debut album, “A Love Letter.” Across ten somber, vibrant, organic songs, the band creates cinematic soundscapes and textures with emotive authenticity. Dreamlike auras of tranquility intertwine with enveloping swells of emotion, carried out in a measured, mesmerizing delivery. Completed with artwork by Michael Cobra, “A Love Letter” is an emotive and immersive proper introduction to Foreign Film.
Irwin states: “After two years of unhindered creativity, we are excited to share that experience with the world. A Love Letter is full of emotions, heartbreak, loss, reconciliation, and new beginnings, from start to finish. We hope everyone enjoys the ride as much as we did in creating it.“
Alongside the album’s release, an immersive new video for the song “Somnolence” also arrives, directed and filmed by Devon Whitaker.
