Southeast Michigan instrumental quartet Man Mountain have released “Absence/Descent,” the third and final single from their forthcoming album “Threads of Another Life,” due out July 24 via Spartan Records. The track offers one last glimpse into a record shaped by uncertainty, isolation, grief, and transformation — a sweeping seven-song collection that marks the band’s first full-length album in six years.

Built around towering crescendos, textured atmosphere, and a sense of emotional weight that never requires words, “Absence / Descent” captures one of the album’s most intense and cathartic moments. The track explores grief and loss through a dynamic arrangement that moves from uneasy restraint to a crushing finale, blending lo-fi rhythmic experimentation, electronic textures, and the heaviest ending the band has ever committed to tape.

“This song is about grief and loss — that sinking feeling that comes with it, like you’re falling into a black hole,” says guitarist Mike Reaume. “The whole second half is built around a riff I wrote one night just using a delay pedal as a looper. The first half came together later, and Jake really wanted the drums to be a sampled beat — we just didn’t know how to make it happen. Fortunately, a friend of ours was able to help us piece it together. In the studio we also recorded it on real drums, ran them through a bunch of pedals to make them sound lo-fi and distorted, and blended that in with the cleaner electronic sample. It also has the heaviest ending of anything we’ve ever written.”

Threads of Another Life” finds Man Mountain channeling the emotional aftermath of the pandemic era into seven expansive instrumental compositions that balance hope, grief, nostalgia, and acceptance. Recorded with producer Jeremy Wurst (Minor Movements, Tigerwine) and mastered by Ryan Smith (Caspian, Hammock, Hum), the album sees the band pushing further into a sound that blends Post-Rock dynamics, Shoegaze haze, Ambient detail, and Cinematic emotional storytelling.

Originally formed by a group of brothers and longtime friends, Man Mountain have steadily evolved from emotional Indie rRock roots into one of the Midwest’s most compelling instrumental acts. On “Threads of Another Life,” that evolution reaches a new peak, resulting in a record that feels both intensely personal and strikingly universal.

The album’s title draws inspiration from “The Lord of the Rings,” specifically Frodo Baggins’ reflection, “How do you pick up the threads of an old life?” That question runs through the heart of the record, shaping an album concerned with what remains after profound change — and how we carry fragments of who we once were into whatever comes next.

With “Absence / Descent,” Man Mountain deliver a final preview that captures the emotional depth and sonic ambition of “Threads of Another Life“: a record born from upheaval, but ultimately reaching toward clarity, connection, and renewal.

Arriving as the album’s fourth track and serving as a pivotal moment in the record’s emotional arc, “Halcyon Dream” finds Man Mountain embracing their most dreamlike and atmospheric instincts while still delivering the soaring crescendos and cinematic weight that have become hallmarks of the band’s sound. The track balances shimmering shoegaze textures, expansive ambience, and subtle rhythmic momentum, creating a piece that feels equally nostalgic and hopeful.

‘Halcyon Dream’ ties directly into the larger thread running through the album, where each title reflects shared experiences and the ways we try to make sense of them,” explains guitarist Mike Reaume. “For us, this song speaks to the idea of using nostalgia as a way to inspire hope for whatever comes next.”

The song began life in a dramatically different form.

“The track actually started as a quiet ambient interlude, something more weightless and dreamlike,” Reaume continues. “Then I made the mistake of showing it to our drummer Jake, who immediately heard a beat for it and pushed it in a completely different direction. It took a while to stop thinking about it as a purely ambient piece and start hearing it as something closer to shoegaze, but once it clicked, everything opened up. It ended up becoming one of our favorite songs on the record and feels like the perfect way to close the album’s first half.”

“And for the first time ever, we even snuck a bass drop into a song. It’s subtle, but it’s definitely there.”

Originally formed by a group of brothers and longtime friends, Man Mountain have steadily evolved from their roots in emotional Indie Rock into one of the Midwest’s most compelling instrumental acts. On “Threads of Another Life,” that evolution reaches new heights, resulting in a record that feels both intensely personal and universally resonant.

The album’s title draws inspiration from “The Lord of the Rings,” referencing Frodo Baggins‘ reflection, “How do you pick up the threads of an old life?” That question serves as a thematic anchor throughout the record, exploring what remains after periods of profound change and how we move forward carrying pieces of who we once were.

With “Halcyon Dream,” Man Mountain capture one of the album’s most uplifting moments—a reminder that looking back isn’t always an exercise in longing, but can also be a way of finding hope in what lies ahead.
