Doom Metal band DiGelsomina by former Lyraka guitarist/composer Andy DiGelsomina and vocalist Robert Lowe (ex-Candlemass, ex-Solitude Aeturnus, ex-Grief Collector) has announced debut album, “Sic Itur Ad Astra,” scheduled for release independently on June 02, 2023. Stream track “Mahanaim” through the YouTube player below:
DiGelsomina’s debut album, “Sic Itur Ad Astra” is an allegorical fantasy the Warrior Angel (origin: the land of Mahanaim) who is fighting avatars of the Lovecraft character Nyarlathotep. The attacks from the antagonist are both mental and physical, the former through the use of the Trapezohedron, which conveys messages she misinterprets as coming from God.
The story originates well over a million years ago, when the Warrior Angel and heavenly Host stop a powerful dragon (a common avatar of Nyarlathotep), reducing him to a crawling serpent on the earth, where he nevertheless ends up ruling.
Upon discovering the mystical trapezohedron and becoming aware of her nemesis’ subjugation of Terra, the Warrior Angel is taken upon an Epic journey, believing she is being led by God to the whereabouts of her enemy. Nyarlathotep ultimately ensorcells her, leaving her trapped in the deltohedron and temporarily unable to continue battle. This sets the stage for the next album and the appearance of her holistic companion, the Conqueror.
DiGelsomina sprang from the collaboration between former Lyraka composer/lead guitarist Andy DiGelsomina and Robert Lowe (formerly of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus). From there the doom bells tolled a tale of Angelic Warriors with Lovecraftian antagonists.
Andy DiGelsomina was born in Springfield, Ohio but spent the majority of his life in New England. In 2008 he presented a Metal opera to Graham Bonnet (formerly of Blackmore’s Rainbow, which began a 4 year collaboration. Along the way DiGelsomina also hired and recorded with Mark Boals (of Yngwie Malmsteen fame); Al Atkins (of Judas Priest); Veronica Freeman (Benedictum); Rob Diaz (Vastator); Tommy Heart (Fair Warning); and Liz Vandall (Uli Jon Roth, Sahara). He recorded two albums with these musicians, “Lyraka Volumes 1 and 2,” the latter is still to be released. In 2013 Andrew contacted Robert Lowe to sing a song for Lyraka, having been a fan of his work with Solitude Aeturnus since 1992. The song itself ended up addressing psychological issues and not fitting with the Lyraka story; as soon as Andy heard Robert’s vocal performance for the track he was so inspired he began planning a foray into the doom metal genre.
According to the composer-guitarist: “I was a huge fan of Robert’s Solitude Aeturnus work since the early 90s, but naturally I wanted to investigate his vocal work from this century, to make sure I wanted to contact him about my music. One listen to the band’s last album, entitled »Alone«, completely convinced me. I love the early Robert’s voice, but I far prefer the more rugged style he adopted on their later material. I then learned of his albums with Candlemass and all of the above releases became huge favorites of mine, setting in stone my conviction he was an Elite metal vocalist as well as an Icon.”
Robert Lowe was a founding member and the mainstay vocalist (and ultimately, songwriter) for the hugely acclaimed epic doom metal band, Solitude Aeturnus. Early this century he received the call to join the hugely esteemed Kings of Doom, Candlemass, on tour and recording, and he more than lived up to the part. Three deathless albums (not counting EPs and a sensational live album and DVD) were released, and taken their rightful place in the Halls of Hallowed Doom. With DiGelsomina’s “Sic Itur Ad Astra,” he reinforces his place atop the mountains of metal, proving not simply a legendary vocalist, but one of the greatest singers in metal today.
