The Swiss group Dirty Sound Magnet, with the good vibrations of a Shamanic Stoner Rock, released their album “Transgenic” at the end of 2019; and has just unveiled a first live video for the track “Social Media Boy.” Watch the video below:
Dirty Sound Magnet is more than a music group. It is the life project that Stavros Dzodzosz (guitar / vocals), Marco Mottolini (bass, backing vocals), Maxime Cosandey (drums, backing vocals) have decided to adopt. Their credo asserts it loud and clear: “no plan B”. Dirty Sound Magnet is a 100% occupation that feeds on an almost religious passion for music, strong convictions and values common to musicians. The band has been around for over 10 years and never has any of the members had another musical project. The Dirty Sound Magnet family allows the three friends to express themselves fully artistically and humanely.
The DNA of Dirty Sound Magnet stems from the glory years (60s ’, 70s’) of rock music. But Dirty Sound Magnet is not a retro band. The musicians are fully aware of living in 2019 and feed on current productions to offer personal and original music. To define in a few words Dirty Sound Magnet, we can say that their music is a return to the mysterious and shamanic future.
TRANSGENIC
Where the previous Western Lies opus described with sarcasm and virulence the global failings of our capitalist society, Transgenic is more interested in our individual behaviors and emotions within this society drowned in overconsumption and technology. Anchored in reality, Transgenic offers a disturbing vision of our present and our near future. We are in a typically Orwellian dystopian universe with ecological problems and the reign of social networks in addition.
Stavros’s cynical lyrics about self-centeredness and consuming these social media forms a thematic focus of the album. At the same time, the suffering and loneliness of modern human beings are also mentioned. Most of the songs also give pride of place to feelings and personal experiences. In this sense, this album is more intimate than the previous one. Drama, violence, lightness, humor and psychedelia go hand in hand in this apology for the bizarre. Musically, the album draws on the Pop Culture of the past 50 years as well as certain sounds from World Music.
In terms of production, the group has chosen to play with light and shade as well as with the concepts “Organic” and “Transgenic“. The organic side being represented by warm tones and sounds. The songs labeled “Organic” were recorded live, the old-fashioned way, with acoustic instruments such as the balafon, western guitars and Greek bouzouki. They give a decidedly vintage color to the album. These textures are familiar and close to nature.
On the contrary, the “Transgenic” songs remind us that this nature is artificial. Electro production techniques such as sampling illustrate this synthetic aspect. No guitar amplifier was used on the album in order to disguise the classic rock tones. Castles of guitars, which may make you think of synthesizers, were created to accentuate the transgenic side of the sound universe and the words.
The common thread of the album lies in the transition between the organic world, which we have known in the past, and the transgenic, robotic and artificial future that looms before us.
