Ethereal is a Portuguese Metal band that was formed around 1997 by Hugo Soares. By late 1998 the line-up was finally complete, and the band began performing live who notably won 1st place at the 2nd National Modern Music Festival of Mondim de Basto. The band recorded their first EP entitled “Shades of Sadness” in the year 1999 which was then considered one of the emerging Portuguese Metal scene revelations.
Ethereal attained their first record deal with Recital Records and recorded their first full length album entitled “The Dreams of Yearning” in 2003. Still with the same record deal, Ethereal released their second album in 2006 entitled “The Towers of Isolation,” and the band then followed the record release by a lengthy and ambitious Iberian live tour. Around 2008 Ethereal ceased activities and the band members split their ways to continue differing musical endeavors.
Projects were then united such as Beforetherain (featuring Gary Griffith from the USA Doomsters band Morgion), Collapse Of Light (featuring Natalie Koskinen from Shape Of Despair and The Abbey) and Ava Inferi (featuring Rune Eriksen from Mayhem), and the Portuguese band Iberia. Ethereal returned late 2021 with the original formation after a 13-year hiatus, however, this time with the addition of the long-term friend Pedro Arsénio on the third guitar.
The band began preparing for their third full length album entitled “Downfall” which was recorded and mixed between 2023 and 2024 by producer Wilson Silva of WRecords Studios (also drummer at More Than A Thousand and The Last Internationale).
