Freitanás is the name adopted by the vocalist and guitarist of the Coimbra-based band Aoidos, created by his great friend Rui Martins during a gathering at the mythical Taberna 58. In 2026, it also becomes the name of his solo project, with which he releases the album “Ergo Sum” on June 26, 2026.
The album consists of tracks that were written after the creation of Aoidos but did not fit the band’s sound, as well as some more recent ones written after the formation of the solo project, as is the case with the first two singles.
Freitanás is a solo project, but for this release, he was fortunate enough to find three incredible artists to collaborate with.
The incredible Ana Amado, a Portuguese artist based in London, kindly lends her beautiful voice to the personification of Hope on the track “From Filth, Beauty Grows.”
The unbelievable Gaspar “Animal” Ribeiro, one of the best drummers in Portugal today, crushed it on drums in “Guilt-Ridden L.B.K.”
And my grandfather, Américo Freitas, a lifelong musician, even if he claims otherwise. “O Primo da América” is a tribute to him, my way of thanking him and showing him that, after all, playing the trumpet is like riding a bicycle. To which he will tell me that he doesn’t know how to ride a bicycle either.
The sound ranges from the Metal of Zakk Wylde and his various projects to Nevermore, as well as the Rock of Ornatos Violeta and the Portuguese creative soul. The most prominent influence, however, is the vast work of Devin Townsend. Freitanás explores more of the limits of his clean voice, as well as more detailed orchestral compositions, combines a guitar tuning from Devin Townsend himself with that of a bouzouki, and begins to appreciate the characteristic sound of a Stratocaster’s neck pickup. But it is in its themes that this album goes deeper.
Being an adult is a much harder process than anyone can imagine as a child. But beyond the accumulation of responsibilities that come with independence, an entire process of personality formation takes place for which there is no manual. No matter how many warnings are given by educators, nothing prepares a human being for the tornado of situations that will engulf them sooner or later. Choices are made, attitudes taken, most of the time without a real awareness of their ramifications. And just as quickly as one is thrown into the storm, it passes, leaving the new adult often not quite knowing what happened, with responsibilities like earning their bread and a traumatic burden that reveals itself little by little.
This album is an attempt to express the process of excavating the fossils of this storm, understanding how one was affected, and how to move forward as healthily as possible.
