Hidden gem of 70s Italian rock, UT’s only album “Homo” (1974) is finally getting its first-ever worldwide CD release! A Japan-exclusive CD release has been officially set for November 18th.
UT is a chorus band that masterfully utilizes uniquely Italian falsetto vocals. However, since they are a collective of hardcore studio musicians, the quality of their performance is superb. This album, filled with melodious beauty and robust musicianship, is an absolute must-listen.
“Homo” is a concept album that tells an epic story tracing a single human life—from birth and growth, to learning about love, dreaming, facing anguish and war, self-questioning, reminiscence, maturity, peace, and finally, the return of the soul.
Similar concepts could be found in PFM‘s debut work “Storia di un minuto” (1972), Ricordi d’Infanzia‘s “Io Uomo” (1973), and Quella Vecchia Locanda‘s “Quella Vecchia Locanda” (1972). However, perhaps because UT’s album was the only one released by an indie label, it never quite saw the light of day.
That being said, the single “Homo” became a hit in Italy, reaching number 11 on the charts. Furthermore, French singer Sheila covered it as “L’amour qui brûle en moi,” scoring a massive hit that peaked at number 2 in France and was heard all over Europe.
UT was a band with a Pop sensibility reminiscent of I Pooh and New Trolls, and it is a true shame that their popularity did not soar despite having a major hit.
It is almost a miracle that the concept of an album made 52 years ago can still be listened to today with such meaningful relevance. Likewise, it is equally a miracle that this album, which has long been a rare collector’s item, is now being released on CD.
This release includes the single “La Strada Era Bella / Camelot” released at the time as bonus tracks.
For this archival release, we obtained the full cooperation of band member Franco Tallarita, who provided valuable testimony about UT and the surrounding scene. The Japanese liner notes, which offer a great understanding of the music scene back then, are a must-read.
