Swedish Progressive Rock artist Johan Steensland has unveiled the first single from his forthcoming album “The Triphant,” with “Lay Down Your Guns” offering the first glimpse into a new chapter of his increasingly ambitious musical and storytelling world.
The third progressive rock album in Steensland’s catalogue, The Triphant follows Crossfade and the acclaimed rock opera Duality. While his previous albums explored their stories through the rock-opera format, The Triphant takes a different approach, with the narrative carried by a single vocalist.
The album tells the story of Dennis, a painter, and Anika, a computer scientist, whose chance meeting opens an unexpected door to the dramatic changes they both crave. But change is rarely straightforward and the choices they face come with a price.

For Steensland, the human element of the musicians and their performances remains at the heart of the album:
I strive to give the listener an authentic and organic experience, to which the musicians’ miniscule imperfections as well as their unique style and feel are crucial components. It’s a proud dinosaur’s approach, only possible in a context free from AI and any kind of auto-edits.
The first single introduces us to a pivotal moment in Dennis and Anika’s story.
In “Lay Down Your Guns,” Dennis is hurt by Anika’s apparent dismissal of what he believed was a genuinely special moment between them. Confused by her reaction, he wants to break through her hard exterior and find a way to bring them closer again.
Musically, the track showcases the more aggressive and advanced direction Steensland has taken with “The Triphant.” The song combines his Progressive Rock foundations with a strong Melodic sensibility, while an extended instrumental section gives two of the album’s guest musicians the opportunity to take centre stage.
British Jazz keyboardist Emily Francis and renowned Swedish drummer Jonathan Lundberg both shine during the instrumental passage, adding a Fusion-influenced edge to the track.
