Alluvium“: the return of Initial Mass!

Los Angeles Heavy Prog trio Initial Mass releases new album “Alluvium” with the Italian Post-Progressive label Luminol Records. The band’s fourth LP consists of 13 songs that explore territories strikingly different sonic landscapes, a conceptual soundscape in constant evolution. In a nutshell, what Initial Mass does best. This fourth album is the follow-up to 2019’s “Bending Light,” and features some of the group’s most intricate, elaborate and cohesive compositions to date. “Alluvium” is a concept that chronicles the life of an individual as a metaphor for the rise and fall of humanity. The protagonist begins his journey, young and ambitious, excited by the possibility of making a mark, so he becomes increasingly focused on his desire to take what he he wants from the world. As he becomes more powerful he leaves behind a trail of destruction, finding himself isolated in a world he no longer recognizes.

The first single “Wake” is a clear indication of the narrative, as the singer/guitarist Mark Baldwin: “This song not only captures virtually every mood on the album, but it is also the culmination of everything we have done so far as a band musically. It is a song that has really pushed us further as a musical unit. Wake is one of the pivotal points of the concept, where the central character reaches his peak while surrounded by the chaos and endless possibilities that big cities tend to offer. This is the point in the story where everything changes.

Alluvium” was recorded and mixed by Ron Sandoval at Rev Studios, who also also co-produced it with the band. Mastering was handled by Andrew Alekel.
