Rising Montreal-based outfit Sum and Substance have released a new live performance video for their track “I Still Function,” captured at the city’s iconic Barfly. The video offers an intimate look at the group’s technical volatility and commanding stage presence, elements that have quickly established them as a noteworthy fixture in the local music scene.

Defined by a distinctive configuration that eschews a traditional rhythm player in favor of co-lead guitarists Jeffrey Lehberg and Sehmim Al, the band delivers a sound rooted in the intricate textures of math rock and progressive rock. In this live rendition of “I Still Function,” the intertwining riffs of Lehberg and Al provide a complex Melodic foundation for Alex Kofman’s searing vocal delivery and driving bass lines. The performance is rounded out by the tight, propulsive percussion of drummer Andre Ouellette.
While the studio version of the track appears on the band’s self-titled debut EP — released on June 09, 2026 — this live capture at Barfly emphasizes the “unreleased” rawness and energy that the trio brings to the stage. The release follows a significant period of momentum for the band, including a recent tour through Ontario and a performance at the 31st edition of the NXNE music festival in Toronto, where they shared stages with acclaimed acts such as Covet.
For enthusiasts of guitar-driven music, Progressive, and technical Math Rock, Sum and Substance represent a bridge between melodic accessibility and instrumental complexity.
