Melbourne-based Psych-Prog/Post-Rock stalwarts Mushroom Giant have returned with their latest single, “A Perfect Storm.” Recorded and engineered by Craig Harnath at the renowned Hothouse Studios in St Kilda, the track marks a significant moment in the band’s evolution as they continue to craft instrumental music designed for a “collective head space.”
The composition of “A Perfect Storm” is a testament to the band’s organic creative process. Featuring the established lineup of Simon Wade (guitar), Jesse Delaney (guitar), Craig Fryers (bass and guitar), and Trent Horwood (drums), the track includes notable solo contributions from both Wade and Delaney. In a nod to human artistry, the single’s graphic design was handled by Craig Fryers without the use of AI.
Formed in 2002, the quartet has built a formidable reputation over four albums, with a fifth full-length release currently on the horizon. This new single, which follows their 2023 album “In A Forest,” captures a piece of music that has been gestating within the band’s repertoire for some time.

Sharing the history and the spirit of the release, the band issued the following message:
“Hello friends,
It’s always a special feeling when we get to upload a brand new song, as we have today with ‘A Perfect Storm.’
The front part of this song was there when we recorded our IN A FOREST album, and was considered back then as a short ambient little song (then called ‘Nightcrawlers’) sitting beneath the grand canopy of the songs off that album. But we had an inkling there was more to it and new themes started to emerge every time we jammed it, giving the song more scope – and adding about five more minutes to its length.
We debuted this song in our live set when we toured with Russian Circles (US) early in 2024. What a pleasure that was – good times.
This song is exclusive only via our Bandcamp page prior to its worldwide release on Aug 21. We hope you enjoy the listen. Play it loud though, or via your headphones. It’s one of those kinda things.
