“Stargazer” arrived almost fully formed when lead guitarist Kevin See showed his new song, driven by a simple but memorable riff and a dramatic chromatic walk-down, to the band. Even in its earliest forms, it managed to feel both nuanced and primitive. And it came with a hell of a prompt; Kevin had taken to calling the new song “Caveman Stargazer.”
After a long walk on an overcast night, with lights from houses and streetlamps casting a dull glow that obscured the night sky, singer and lyricist Bryan Reed found himself imagining the wonder ancient people must have felt looking up at the night in true darkness, and how drab and disheartening the light-polluted modern sky must seem by comparison.
“I was remembering Walt Whitman’s poem, ‘When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer,’ and reflecting on the idea that nature’s wonder is best experienced in its true form ā rather than through second-hand explanations,” Reed says.
“At the same time, though, I was feeling dragged down by how our modern life, for all its wondrous innovations, has distanced us from the full, awe-inspiring expanse of the night sky and the stars burning bright, light-years away. That sense of mystery isn’t completely gone, but I felt an aching melancholy looking up at that gray night and thinking about how much brilliance was obscured by man-made haze and diffused lights.“
Doomsday Profit will release their self-titled full-length album on Sept. 19.
About Doomsday Profit
Thereās no time to waste. At least thatās how Doomsday Profit seems to be operating. After making their debut with the gritty stoner-sludge of 2021āsĀ “In Idle Orbit,” the Durham, N.C.-based band issued 2024ās Psych-leaning split with Virginia-based Smoke, and has kept the momentum going ever since. With their forthcoming self-titled album, Doomsday Profit now has embedded an even wider array of influences into their acerbic, dystopian sludge. Particles of monolithic doom, grisly death ānā roll grooves, driving Punk Rock and scathing Black Metal all flash in the bandās raw self-titled LP.
As ever, Doomsday Profit has a finger pointed squarely at the powers that be, but theyāve also learned to turn their ire inward, and balance their vitriol with melancholic nuance. This broader approach has turned their already dynamic performances into a must-see, with a live resume that includes Hopscotch Music Festival and Seismic Summer, as well as supporting slots with established acts like Thou, The Obsessed, Black Tusk, REZN, Year of the Cobra,Ā and Restless Spirit.
On this recording, Doomsday Profit is: Bryan Reed (rhythm guitar/vocals), Kevin See (lead guitar/vocals), Ryan Sweeney (bass/vocals), and David Ruiz (drums).
