Chicago Instrumental Progressive Rock band Outrun The Sunlight unveil the track “Ambivalence 2.0” feat. Ardea from upcoming album “The Return of Inertia 2.0” due out on February 17, 2023. Stream the track through the YouTube player below:
The band says: “We are so excited to bring you, Ambivalence 2.0, the third track on our upcoming album, The Return of Inertia 2.0. It was recorded during the lockdown in 2020, while we were between drummers. Before Luke joined as our full-time drummer, we enlisted our longtime friend, James Knoerl (Aviations), to perform drums on this to keep our creative energy alive. The synths on this song are quite special as well. They were originally created by Austin’s brother, Samuel Peters (Ardea) when he was just 14 years old, and became the backbone of the track’s creation. Samuel recreated those synths in 2020 for this new release, and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.“
The original “The Return of Inertia” was written in 2011 by Austin Peters and Cody McCarty at the ages of 19 and 20. Austin was studying film at university during the day, and at night would spend as much time as he could making music. “I was simultaneously learning how to record and mix myself as I made these songs,” he reflects. “I had a cheap audio interface that a friend let me borrow, a POD X3, GarageBand, and an overflow of inspiration from the music I was listening to at the time. That summer, I travelled from Chicago to Michigan where Cody lived to finish writing together.“
The final product was a messy, harebrained expression of instrumental metal music, but highly resonant with a newly formed online community of djent and metal fans. Austin continues, “The album was badly recorded, poorly mixed, and yet none of that seemed to matter. The songs continued to be played, requested, and became the backbone for the start of this band and a huge jumping-off point that motivated me to make more music.“
Nine years later, in 2020, the world was in lockdown, and Outrun the Sunlight was between drummers. With a new album on-hold, Austin looked for ways to keep his creative energy flowing, and began to slowly re-recording the guitars for the re-release, purely for fun, not at all knowing where it was going to lead. As the songs took shape, Austin started to invite the current members of Outrun to perform and reinterpret the original music. He enlisted his long-time friend James Knoerl (Aviations), who was living in New York, to put his spin on the drum parts.
“It just became obvious,” Austin remarks, “that this project was fueling much more than my creativity as it began to take on a new life. These songs, reimagined, remind me of how mysterious creativity can be. I had no idea what I was doing back in 2011, and I think that’s how the magic of these songs happened. I feel grateful I was able to meet them again as these years later, providing a useful goalpost for our band to work toward during an uncertain and strange time.“
