Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L have released a new proto-Heavy incantation, “Musta ruuna,” available now on Svart Records. The track is based on an incantation fragment from 1786 recorded by Christfrid Ganander, the creator of Finland’s first dictionary. This single previews the upcoming sixth album, “Oli kerran ryytimaassa…,” set to be released on September 26, 2025.

Musta ruuna is a splatter-visual proto-heavy incantation based on an incantation fragment from 1786 recorded by Christfrid Ganander, the creator of Finland’s first dictionary. The incantation, apparently used for various purposes, exists in multiple versions from both Karelia and other parts of Finland. In oral cultures, words held immense power; they directly influenced reality and maintained collective memory. They were used for healing, defending against supernatural forces, cursing others’ fishing luck, marking adulthood, transitioning to the afterlife, or transforming from single to married. Songs were sung, and the world was taught into existence. It is said that due to the influence of written culture, incantations lost their significance and power. Perhaps, but they have left behind a rich verbal glimpse into diverse oral traditions and a unique gallery of characters, including “Pain Girl,” “Iron Man,” “Silver Man,” “Bread Man,” “Hyyhäröinen,” “Dream Man,” “Dog’s Tail,” “Hiien Maiden,” among others. Words still hold power. Writers and singers are persecuted and murdered. When will humanity learn? Will it ever?
