Brazil, what all comes to mind? Of course, the magic number combination 7:1, PeleCarnivalSambaCoffeethe rainforestthe Amazon – we all know a vast and diverse country in every respect, but also slums, poverty, and environmental problems. And Rock music? Certainly Sepultura and the Cavalera brothers. But then what?

Red Mess started in 2013 in Londrina, Brazil. Ten years after the band’s founding, singer and bassist Lucas Klepa, guitarist Thiago Franzim, and drummer Douglas Labigalini made their way to Berlin together, which certainly strengthens their bond. And you can feel and hear this community on the new album. The extremely likeable trio combines the raw sounds of 90s Grunge with the heaviness of Stoner Rock and a great desire to experiment. Their distinctive, distinctive voice remains recognizable, haunting and full of emotion, giving the songs soul and recognizability. But the band’s musical finesse, skill, and energy are also impressive.

With their first EPs in 2014 and 2015, the band quickly attracted attention in the Brazilian underground scene. Their debut album, “Into the Mess” (2017), established their sound. 2022 marked a turning point for the band: After the coronavirus pandemic, Red Mess played a European tour, relocated to Berlin, and released “Breathtaker” on Norway’s All Good Clean Records.

Their sound palette has expanded. Heavy guitar walls and flowing psychedelic passages blend with the wild emotionality of the early Sub Pop era. But despite their unpolished and raw sound, Red Mess are catchy and have good songs that are engaging and delicately played, yet passionate and wild.

The trio has built a multifaceted network, established themselves in the local scene, and quickly become more than an insider tip. Red Mess are a charismatic, captivating, and sweat-inducing live act, and with “Hi-Tech Starvation,” they take their strengths to a new level, breathing fresh air into the dusty Desert Rock scene.

Hi-Tech Starvation” is short, intense (“Master of Reality” is just two minutes and eight seconds longer), and a new beginning for the band, marking a second debut. Nothing is superfluous; everything is spot on. The “Joga bonito” of Rock music, it’s about the beauty and joy of playing. Typically Brazilian.
