Originally released in 1970 on the tiny Reflection label, the Dogfeet album is a true lost gem of the British Progressive underground, blending Blues-Rock, Psychedelia and early Progressive Rock, featuring Trevor Povey’s inspired songwriting and guitar work.
Formed in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, by guitarist and songwriter Trevor Povey, vocalist Alan Pearse, bassist Dave Nicholls and drummer Derek Perry, the band evolved through a series of names — Chicago Max, Sopwith Camel, Malibou and Armageddon — before Reflection Records gave them the unlikely name Dogfeet.
Recorded at London’s legendary AIR Studios and produced by Andrew Cameron Miller, the album captures a band caught between the Blues-Rock traditions of the late ’60s, Psychedelic Experimentation and the emerging Progressive movement. Povey’s guitar work moves effortlessly from Heavy Blues-driven passages to more adventurous sounds, while Pearse’s distinctive vocals and the flexible rhythm section give the album its unique character.
Tracks such as “On the Road,” “Evil Woman,” the extended Progressive piece “Now I Know,” the Atmospheric “Reprise” and the unexpected Western-flavored “Since I Went Away” reveal a band reaching well beyond its Blues-Rock roots.
Despite its musical strengths, the Dogfeet album received almost no promotion and was pressed in extremely small quantities, making it a true rarity today. A planned single featuring their powerful cover of their labelmates Andwellas Dream’s “Mr. Sunshine” was cancelled, and the band dissolved soon afterwards.
