“Liminality” is what happens when a composer is handed a deadline by his own body. Sonus Umbra founder and bassist Luis Nasser was diagnosed with a brain tumor gnarly enough that it took two surgeries to remove. Somewhere in the ICU, wracked in pain and facing what he calls his quantum execution. He was asked a question by the void: Death or life?
He chose life. Then came the hallucinations, and with them the music. “My brain became an antenna,” Nasser writes, and he scribbled what it received onto hospital napkins as fast as he could, before it faded like the memory of a dream. He walked out of the hospital with a stack of napkins, no story, and a covenant he had no idea how to honor.
The clarity came later, on a night walk through Parque España in Mexico City, in conversation with Rosa María Sánchez García, to whom the album is dedicated. She listened to the ICU story and gave it back to him in the form of a mirror. What had been an alien language became an image he could see and use: two chapters, seven pieces, one passage through the threshold.
