“Avast,” the grand finale of “Treadle & Loom,” explores the psychology of Ahab and his attitude toward life. In attempting this task “Avast” serves as a warning against bitterness; an invitation to gratitude; and a plea to heed the call, like that which came from Starbuck, to repent and turn. It is at the same time a tragedy and a triumph.
