The Ammonoid project was born in 2022, with a lineup that unites the two coasts of the USA exploring Progressive Doom sounds steeped in Psychedelia. After a good demo, the band released their debut EP “Pierce The Veil,” containing 2 tracks for over 16 minutes of music, equally divided in duration. Right from the first notes of the opener “Pierce The Veil’” the band showcases their sound, taking the dark and heavy traits of Doom and contaminating them with the lysergic atmospheres of Psychedelia and a touch of Prog in the elaboration of the plots. Solid, elaborate drumming and deep, load-bearing bass lines characterise the rhythm section, good guitar work and an incisive vocal complete the sound. A well-developed and intense piece in its entirety, taking advantage of the long duration to evolve the theme of the piece. The second track “Heart Of A Bird” ranges and explores the different influences that characterise the band’s personal style. Excellent vocals intertwine with intense and elaborate instrumental textures with fine guitar solo cues. The band’s more Prog/Psych side permeates the track, with the roughness of Metal and Doom acting as a counterbalance. A band that enhances its personal style through two long tracks that alternate good instrumental moments with dynamic and incisive sung parts. The band’s sound is solid and elaborate, developed between Doom Metal with Prog and Psych contaminations. While waiting for a full-length, I recommend this EP to lovers of more elaborate modern heavy sounds.
