[Review] Baber / Wileman – Baber / Wileman

Baber / Wileman is a roject formed by Matt Baber (Sanguine Hum) and Richard Wileman (Karda Estra) which offers experimental sounds. The debut album titled “Baber / Wileman” was released on January 10, 2022 via Believers Roast and contains 9 tracks. The album opens with “FOUR” a short intro of just over 1 minute, with a background of keyboard and piano arpeggios. The second “Souvenir” opens with the acoustic guitar and a warm and expressive vocal to which the notes of the piano intertwine. A track that alternates delicate and dreamy passages with others more Experimental, with the keyboards in evidence, to conclude with the last sung part. The atmospheres are darker in “Mondo Profondo 4” characterized by intertwining piano and keyboards with a modern and electronic rhythmic session. Enriched by tempo changes, the track is constantly evolving alternating more intricate passages with softer ones, always maintaining a dark sound that increases in intensity with the passing of the minutes. “THREE audio slow” is a short interlude lasting just under 2 minutes, featuring dreamy piano melodies. We are in the middle of the album with “Emperor” characterized by fine dreamy melodies of guitar and paino on which a very warm and expressive vocal is inserted. In the finale it becomes more pompous with the entry of a choral vocal, and the track presents excellent intertwining between piano and guitar, well composed and executed. “Passing Wave” is a winning blend of Progressive and Experimental sounds, with forays into Fusion with extensive use of keyboards. The plots are intricate and frenetic, with a tight and elaborate rhythmic session, a track full of virtuosity, which in the finale concludes with a more Experimental section. Delicate paino melodies and acoustic guitar arpeggios open “2009,” a track with Jazzy influences where we find a pleasant duet between piano and clarinet. Very intense, it shows a softer facet of their sound. “Day Follows Night” returns again to sound halfway between Prog and Experimentation, with a solid rhythm session and good mixes between guitar and keyboards. The intensity increases with the passage of the piece, very intense with a good clarinet insert in the finale, and then concludes with a hypnotic keyboard melody. The album ends with “The Birth Of Spring” a sweet song sung on a mix of guitar and piano arpeggios. full of pathos, he concludes this good listening with softer plots. An interesting project, which enhances the technique of the musicians involved, giving life to 9 intense tracks that mix different genres and styles. Of Experimental matrix, there is no lack of more delicate passages and other Progressives, where the artists showcase their compositional and executive technique. A listening recommended for lovers of the more Experimental Prog sounds, with long instrumental sections performed with technique and quality.
