[Review] Geometry Of Chaos – Soldiers of the New World Order

Geometry Of Chaos is the new Progressive Metal project of the poly-instrumentalist Fabio La Manna (bass, guitar and keyboards) and of the drummer Davide Cardella and the vocals alternate Ethan Cronin, Marcelo Vieira and Elena Lippe. Their self-produced debut album “Soldiers of the New World Order” released on September 23, 2020 contains 8 tracks between 6 and 8 minutes in length. Their music alternates between powerful guitar riffs, tempo changes and elaborate passages and a solid and intricate rhythm session. The opener “Idolatry” starts off strong with massive and elaborate guitar riffs and a powerful rhythmic session, then enters an intense and full of energy vocal. A track that mixes progressive Metal with more atmospheric sounds, rich in tempo changes and with catchy guitar riffs, the protagonist of technical solo inserts. Biting guitar riffs open “Joker’s Dance” which features a tighter and more well developed rhythm, with a chorus that echoes in the mind. The passages are always very elaborate, although the track is more direct, the guitar in the instrumental sections offers intricate solos showing Fabio’s good technique. At times hypnotic, this track is a concentrate of power and passages that remain in the listener’s mind. “Spiral Staircase” features winning guitar riffs, a good background of atmospheric keyboards and intricate textures enhanced by continuous tempo changes. The mixes between guitar and keyboards are of exquisite workmanship, a quality Prog Metal with atmospheric passages and more hard parts with sudden accelerations and high-level musical intertwining. The band is able to transpose 70s-inspired passages nowadays and place them in a fresh and harder context. “Garage Evil” takes up the musical discourse of the first two songs, between accelerated and incisive guitar riffs, inserting more technical and intricate passages without exceeding too much in virtuosity. Entirely instrumental, it enhances the technical skills of the two musicians, who free from schemes range within the Prog genre, passing from more atmospheric moments to sudden accelerations with an excellent technique. A hypnotic bass line opens “Observer,” a passage with darker atmospheres both in music and in vocals, very warm and expressive. The rhythm session is very elaborate, as well as the very intricate melodies and in the instrumental section a dark colored organ offers a good solo, followed by the guitar one. The track closes leaving behind an aura of mystery, a really good passage of the album. “Saturated” returns to the style of the first tracks, heavy riffs carrying bass lines and a solid and elaborate rhythm. The guitar is stratified and a vocal full of energy enters, with the track in continuous evolution between tempo changes and sound interlacing of fine workmanship. The guitar solo in crescendo is also good, with the return of the vocal the track closes. In “Premonition” the beginning is softer, with the intensity that increases with the passage of the piece, characterized by hard passages and a very aggressive vocal that alternates sung and other more recited parts. An added value of the piece are the continuous tempo changes, which enhance both the compositional and executive techniques of the two artists, offering elaborate plots and high-level symphonic openings. The title track closes the album, a more atmospheric instrumental track, characterized by repeated and hypnotic melodies and guitar inserts on a keyboard background. Very particular and original is an ending that you do not expect but that strikes positively for the choice of sounds and their mixture, combining more electronic traits with Rock, very intricate. The keyboards offer a prolonged acid solo reminiscent of the ’70s Prog, while the second part up to the closing returns to more Rock atmospheres with a pleasant guitar solo and a solid drum. A good debut for this project that enhances the technique of the musicians and singers involved, with elaborate plots and intricate technical passages. The vocals are warm and expressive and interpret the tracks well, Fabio highlights all his technique on several instruments as well as the powerful and solid drum manages to create a rhythmic session with sophisticated passages. It is not just a technical exercise but the skill with the instruments is put at the service of the band, creating a complex but accessible sound. A listening recommended for all lovers of the harder sounds of Prog, a fresh work with personal characters, the two artists are good at maintaining a high level and intensity for the entire duration of listening.
