L’Ira del Baccano is the brainchild of Alessandro ‘Drughito’ Santori and Roberto Malerba as an instrumental band that mixes Doom sounds with Psychedelia and Space Rock. They have many musical influences, with forays into Heavy Prog with references from the late 60s and early 70s Rock masters, consolidating their personal and original style over time. The new album “Cosmic Evoked Potentials” was released on March 03, 2023 via Subsound Records and contains five tracks of long duration. The opening track “The Strange Dream of my Old Sun” features intertwining guitar arpeggios and an atmospheric intro. The rhythm section includes deep, load-bearing bass lines and solid, elaborate drumming that is enriched by continuous tempo changes. Psychedelic traits alternate with more heavy openings with granitic guitar riffs and passages with more enveloping and dilated sounds with synth inserts that work well together with the guitars. A constantly evolving track, always very intense and dynamic, creating involving passages ending in a musical crescendo enriched by effects. The longest track on the album, “Gentian (Improvisation 42)*,” which is over 13 minutes long, opens with some fine technical and elaborate drumming. Guitar arpeggios are layered and interwoven with synth inserts, creating an enveloping sound with modern, psychedelic traits. Effects and modulations are used with precision, while the track increases in intensity as the minutes go by with fine guitar work. The continuous tempo changes enhance the band’s technique as well as showing the wide range of influences their sound has to offer. Massive riffs and a granitic rhythm section accompany us in this well-developed and highly addictive epic track. “The Electric Resolution” opens with psychedelic effects and then develops with solid drumming and a killer bassline. The riffs are gritty and the guitar solo inserts scratchy, with the track’s theme constantly evolving between elaborate tempo changes and engaging guitar and synth phrasing. An energetic track that incorporates Heavy and Psychedelic traits with forays into Space Rock. The title track “Cosmic Evoked Potentials” opens with a deep, penetrating bass line and solid, well-structured drumming. Guitar and synth work lend a lysergic touch to the sound, creating an enveloping atmosphere that guides the listener into the deeper zones of the band’s sound. In a continuous musical crescendo, moving slowly in the first part and concluding by increasing the intensity and incorporating more and more heavy elements as the minutes go by, while still maintaining a markedly Psychedelic, modern, fresh and original character. The album ends with the shortest track in duration, “Eclipse Omega,” developed on interweaving arpeggios and effects with soft, dilated sounds. An acid finale where the band works well with effects and sound modulations. A band that confirms and evolves the good things heard on previous record releases, offering a fresh and modern album. The band’s Psychedelic imprinting is evident, with forays into Heavy Rock and Space, managing to bring the atmospheres of the late 60s/early 70s into a modern and original context. A recommended listen for all lovers of instrumental Heavy Psych sounds, with long guitar and synth textures, drumming with a solid and elaborate groove and load-bearing bass lines.
