“Thinking Without Language” is the debut EP by The Orphaned Bee, the solo project of Australian multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer Brett Tollis. A release that embraces a wide emotional spectrum, it blends Progressive Rock with modern Electronic textures, Ambient soundscapes and cinematic atmospheres, offering a journey that speaks beyond words. The album opens with “Rain,” a track that merges modern soundscapes with Progressive Rock, marked by an extensive use of synths and electronic layers. A sort of Synth Prog where keyboards dominate the melodies, the hypnotic bass line and processed vocals create a sense of Space Synth Rock. The intensity gradually increases, and in its second half the track builds into an expansive section with the synths taking center stage. With “Water,” the project incorporates heavier elements into its sound while keeping the distinctive electronic and effect-driven identity intact. Darker atmospheres emerge, weaving together Progressive, Heavy and Electronic influences. Processed vocals enhance the mood as the track develops into rich Synth Rock textures, coloured by Progressive overtones. “Sanctuary” marks the midpoint of the EP. Opening with mystical atmospheres and ethereal, ambient-style keyboards, the track soon introduces effected vocals over a minimal yet percussive rhythm. Its triumphant feel grows gradually, with marching-style drumming and lush layers of keys, creating a grandiose and evocative soundscape. With “Fire”, the project draws from early electronic music and Krautrock, adding a spacey touch. Processed vocals carry the listener through a voyage across time and sound, supported by ethereal and atmospheric synth melodies. The drumming underlines the steady pace of this space-oriented journey before shifting into more modern electronic patterns, highlighting the project’s Experimental side and willingness to explore. The listening experience concludes with the longest piece, “Ascendance”, running at 5:50. This track reinforces the EP’s stylistic approach, weaving together Electronics, Krautrock and Progressive Rock in a fusion of past and present. Dominated by synths and electronic layers, it envelops the listener in melancholic atmospheres while showcasing refined use of effects, modulation and sonic textures. The musical themes are both engaging and sophisticated, presenting an electronic-driven sound of high quality. With “Thinking Without Language,” The Orphaned Bee delivers a debut that stands halfway between modern and classic soundscapes, blending Krautrock, Prog and electronic experimentation. An EP where synths take the lead role, supported by extensive use of effects and modulation, it invites the listener to explore diverse sonic territories. A distinctive and intriguing release, particularly appealing to fans of the more electronic side of Progressive Rock, with long instrumental passages and Atmospheric, effect-laden vocals.
