YAK is a power trio from Alta Gracia, Argentina, offering a blend of Stoner/Desert Rock steeped in Progressive Rock and forays into Heavy sonorities. Very little information can be found on this project, with only the Bandcamp page available from which to purchase this debut self-titled EP. Consisting of only two tracks ranging from 4:43 to 6:27 in duration, it was released on May 23, 2024 and was self-produced by the trio. The first track entitled “REG” opens with a deep, load-bearing bass line that together with solid drumming generates a rhythm section in line with modern desert/stoner releases. The guitar creates good work in both melodies and solo inserts, with the band developing the track by enriching it with tempo changes and managing to mix more Psychedelic and dilated passages with others markedly Desert Rock. In the finale, the intensity increases with the inclusion of a distorted guitar that brings the sound to a more Heavy terrain. The second track that makes up this short EP, “ERG,” a pun on the title of the previous one, opens with effects and modulations that give way to a dilated-sounding guitar. The bass lines are deep and penetrating, while the drumming complements the rhythm section by moving slowly but offering elaborate passes and fills. In the middle section, the band shows its heavier character, alternating forays into stronger sounds with psychedelic, enveloping openings. A good mixture of genres and styles that shows how the band manages to create its own sound, also offering well-crafted riffs and guitar work. An entirely instrumental work for this Argentine power trio, which presents itself with two well-crafted tracks that bode well for the band’s future record releases. By refining the sound a little more and insisting on their personal traits, which are evident, this band will certainly be able to carve out their own space in the modern Stoner/Desert scene. Worthy of note is the album’s excellent cover art, with a truly eye-catching graphic design.
